This town, in the middle of the Jordan valley, is one of the best archaeological sites given its occupation by Canaanites, Philistines and others. The region features frequently in the exploits of Saul and David, such as the display of Saul's body by the Philistines on Mt Gilboa.
During Roman occupation the small arena in this photo (excavated ruins are right in the center of town) was used as an alternative to crucifixion and other forms of capital punishment. For entertainment, lions or tigers were starved for a period, then thrown into the arena with a prisoner or two.
